Beech Mountain Celebrates 50 Years on Top

Ski Beech

The 2017-18 ski season is a milestone as Beech Mountain celebrates 50 years of skiing in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

The slopes opened in the winter of 1967-68 at an elevation of 5,506 feet, and a half century later they remain the highest slopes east of the Rockies. There will be a season-long celebration of this milestone at Beech Mountain Resort this winter, as well as throughout the resort town of Beech Mountain.

Season-long promotions include 1967 lift ticket prices of $9 for Ladies Night every Tuesday and $9 for Men's Night every Wednesday. Couples Night every Thursday features $16 for the first lift ticket and just $8 for the second ticket. These specials are not valid Dec. 18 to Jan. 1.

Local accommodations are celebrating with a 50th Anniversary $50 Weekday Lodging Special. This deal provides lodging from Sunday to Thursday for just $50 per person, double occupancy excluding holiday periods. Click here for complete details on the 50th Anniversary $50 Weekday Lodging Special.

If you're considering a first-time visit or are interested in a return trip to Beech Mountain this winter, now is the time to make plans. Our complete lodging listing covers everything on the mountain, from ski lodges to condos to ski-in chalets to larger rental homes. There are also comfortable inns. Don't settle for something off mountain when you can stay on mountain and enjoy all the amenities of being in town, with slopes close by. More lodging specials are available by clicking here.

Skybar Beech MountainThere is a lot happening each winter in Beech Mountain. The ski resort has invested millions in upgrades over the last five years, adding snowtubing, a craft brewery and a skybar at the top of the slopes, as well as a new terrain park with a dedicated surface tow lift, as well as its own lighting and snowmaking.

The town of Beech Mountain operates a free youth sledding hill all winter long for kids ages 12 and under. The hill is located next to the visitors center in the heart of town and has its own gun for snowmaking.

Speaking of snowmaking, the ski resort has undergone a transformation in that area. A total of 65 high-tech automated SMI Super PoleCat snow guns have been added in recent years to the snowmaking arsenal, with more coming this winter. The current ability to make snow at Beech Mountain Resort far exceeds that of any point in the resort's 50-year history. That snowmaking is complemented by the mountain's 5,506-foot elevation, which leads to an average annual snowfall of 84.6 inches.

The town of Beech Mountain sits adjacent to the slopes and offers the convenience of walking (or a short drive) to lodging, restaurants, shops and just the right amount of nightlife.

Annual events include the Winterfest Beer Festival in early January and the Totally '80s Retro Ski Weekend in late February.

If you would like to speak with someone about planning a visit to Beech Mountain to celebrate our 50th anniversary, contact the visitors center at 800-468-5506.
