Cardboard Box DerbyBeech Mountain will recognize 50 years of skiing on the highest slopes in eastern America with a special four-day celebration, Thursday, Jan. 25, through Sunday, Jan. 28.

The schedule of events includes contests, fireworks and live music. One of the music acts is the Foothills Oompah Band, which will pay tribute to the music from the Austrian Alps that was often performed in the early years of the resort by the Austrian ski instructors.

Another popular event will be the return of Beech Mountain's legendary Cardboard Box Derby, which takes place on the ski slopes.

The schedule of events kicks off Thursday evening, Jan. 25, with 50th anniversary trivia at the Beech Mountain Brewing Co., along with a performance of the top hits of the 1960s by the band High Standards at the Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria. Also Thursday evening, couples can take advantage of special 1967 lift ticket pricing with night skiing lift tickets just $24 per couple.

Friday's activities include an appearance by The Storks band at Beech Mountain Brewing Co. from 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Saturday afternoon's festivities feature the Foothills Oompah Band at the Beech Tree ski lodge from 3-6 p.m. and a beer stein holding contest at 4 p.m. at the Beech Tree ski lodge. Saturday evening concludes with an encore performance by The Storks, followed by a 50th anniversary fireworks show over the ski slopes, then a late-night DJ in the Beech Tree.

Sunday's Cardboard Box Derby hits the slopes at 2 p.m.

Come join us as we take a celebratory look back to the winter of 1967-68 when Beech Mountain Resort brought big-time skiing to the South.
