Special 50th Anniversary Celebration is Jan. 25-28

Cardboard Box Derby

Beech Mountain recognizes 50 years of skiing on the highest slopes in eastern America with a special four-day celebration, Thurs., Jan. 25, to Sun., Jan. 28.

Schedule of events includes contests, fireworks and live music. One of the music acts is the Foothills Oompah Band, which pays tribute to the music from the Austrian Alps that was often performed in the early years of the resort by Austrian ski instructors.

Another popular event is the return of Beech Mountain's legendary and famous Cardboard Box Derby, taking place Sunday afternoon on the ski slopes.

Festivities kick off Thursday evening, Jan. 25, with 50th anniversary trivia at the Beech Mountain Brewing Co., along with a performance of 1960s hits by the band High Standards at the Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria.

Rock the Casbah at the Totally '80s Retro Ski Weekend

Retro 80s Weekend 2017aaJoin us Feb. 22-25 for the Totally '80s Retro Ski Weekend at Beech Mountain - four days of tubular awesomeness featuring retro skiing daily, '80s music nightly and a host of throwback activities in between.

Ski back in time and rock the casbah like never before with the best lineup of bands in our seven-year history.

The righteousness starts Thursday night with classic rockers DeCarlo, featuring Tommy DeCarlo Sr., lead singer of the legendary rock band Boston. Friday night promises to degenerate the faithful with the retro punk sounds of The Spazmatics, followed on Saturday night by the Carolinas' hottest new '80s tribute band, Cassette Rewind. Cassette Rewind will let the raga drop with the ultimate '80s new wave experience.

Festivities throughout the weekend include a Rubik's Cube competition, Ms. Pac Man contest, retro Name That Tune, the ever-popular $500 Totally Retro Apparel Contest, 1980s show cars in the ski village, Dayglo '80s ski parade and much more. Click below for full details ...

Youth Sledding Hill is Open After Offseason of Upgrades

Sledding Hill BeechMTN 0004Beech Mountain’s youth sledding hill opened in early December for the 2017-18 season.

The sledding hill is owned and operated by the Town of Beech Mountain, which instituted several offseason upgrades. Grading work evened the slope and created a longer stretch to slow down at the bottom, while special padding was installed at the bottom of the hill and along the sides.
 
Other improvements included dividing the hill into a slower side for younger kids and a faster side for older kids, and increasing the capacity of water flow to the snow gun to maximize snowmaking.
 
The sled run is for children 12 and under, with parents allowed to accompany younger kids. Plastic sleds are required. Hot chocolate is available at the pizzeria across the street, with free Wi-Fi and heated rest rooms next door at the Beech Mountain Visitor Center ...
