Family_Fun_Month 003Yippee! Summer is almost here. It’s one of the best times to be in Eastern America’s highest town.

Beech Mountain has officially declared June to be Family Fun Month. The calendar is packed with 30 days of activities, so you can spend time together as a family.

I’m inviting my cousin Darryl in Raleigh and my other cousin Darryl in Charlotte for Family Fun Month. They’re always complaining about how hot it is down there. Their thermometers jump into the 90s and even hit 100. Whew! Up here on the mountain, our summertime temperatures hang around the high 60s and mid-70s.

Those temperatures inspired our very own race series on Beech Mountain called A Cool 5. It takes place June 11. For the family athlete, there’s a five-mile run up to the mountain’s summit. There’s also a 1.5-mile run/walk and a walk-and-wag where you can bring your dog. Keep an eye out for me. I’ll be cheering folks on from my tree.

On June 4, the Kiddo Fishing Derby encourages the little ones to bait a hook. Children 12 and younger can fish for free. Prizes will be given out for the biggest fish, the most fish and the heaviest fish. Who doesn’t love prizes?

Oh, there’s so much to do. You can hop in one of those fancy new ATVs and get a ride-along tour of the mountain for a discounted price. One of my favorite activities is the chairlift ride to the top of the mountain for only $10. And on Fridays, the old Land of Oz theme park is open for tours.

You can play disc golf at Beech Mountain Resort, swim at  Beech Mountain Club and watch a movie under the stars at Brick Oven Pizzeria all for free! Downhill mountain biking and mountain bike lessons are available, too, as well as pickleball. If you never played pickleball, it’s a hoot.

Many of our accommodations offer lodging specials all month, like stay two nights and get a third night free.

Bring the kids, the grandparents, the dog. Even the crazy cousins! See you soon.

Yours truly,
Boomer the Squirrel
