Who Celebrates Families the Entire Month of June? We Do!

One of my favorite times is coming up soon – it’s called Family Fun Month!

Here on Beech Mountain we devote the entire month of June — 30 whole days — to families who come here to have fun. I just love seeing the little ones running around, swimming, fishing, discovering something new.

Temperatures on Beech Mountain in the summertime can’t be beat. My friend at the Visitors Center, Kate Gavenus, said last year the temperature only rose above 79 degrees one time. Add in mountain breezes and low humidity (thanks to Beech’s elevation of more than 5,500 feet) and you have many delightful days to get outdoors.

“The temperature is one of the main things that sets us apart,” Gavenus says. “Good weather is probably the prime thing people are looking for when they want to get out in the summer.”

For you runners out there, A Cool 5 Race Weekend returns June 16-18. There’s a five-mile run that goes waaaayyy up on the mountain and winds back down. The 1.5-mile fun run/walk is less intense. My personal favorite is the pet-friendly 1.5-mile walk and wag.

Other fun things include guided nature hikes — keep your eye out for me, waving from the treetops — chairlift rides and ATV tours. Have you heard of pickleball? How about Zumba or disc golf? We have it all, so now’s the time to try it.

“The idea is to give families chances to reconnect, for parents and grandparents to spend time with their kids doing something relaxing,” Gavenus says.

Some of our great local businesses pitch in with special events for Family Fun Month. Fred’s Mercantile throws a Great American Backyard Cookout. Brick Oven Pizzeria screens movies under the stars. Our neighbors at Grandfather Mountain, Linville Caverns and Tweetsie Railroad give a discount on tickets.

Family vacations can get expensive, but Family Fun Month is a great deal. Many activities are free or offered at a lowered cost. Plus, we have three lodging specials available every day of the month. My favorite is: buy two nights, you can get a third for free, which is a good thing because once you’re here, you won’t want to leave!

See you soon in Eastern America’s Highest Town.

Yours truly,
