SUMMER

It’s a cool, cool summer

Summer brings sun, warm weather (not too warm, after all, we are one of Eastern America’s coolest towns) and exciting outdoor recreation and mile-high relaxation to Beech Mountain. Beyond hiking, biking and fishing, there are many other fun activities for the entire family.

Around Town

What a gem!

Beech Mountain recently added two new attractions to our roster of family fun activities.

Gem Mining at The White Wolf Lodge is sure to provide an afternoon of fun for the little ones as they hunt for treasures and while there be sure to check out the climbing wall. But it’s not just about the kids, every Sunday in July from 10AM to 11:30AM, the White Wolf Lodge will be hosting Morning Yoga at the Lodge on their large porch overlooking the mountains. Sign up on on their website Whitewolflodge.org

The Mountaineer Adventure Tower, located on Bark Park Way, is another must for those looking to climb their way to the top. This 3-story rope course also features a 25-foot slide that’s sure to thrill kids of all ages.

And the band plays on

During Summer various venues on the mountain host free live music featuring local bands. Check out our calendar page for details.

For the kids

A “must do’” for anyone with small kids is to visit one or all of Beech Mountain’s playgrounds. The Fireman’s Park Playground, located next to a real live fire station, will let your child’s creative mind run wild. Kids can pretend to fight fires on playground equipment that looks like a real fire engine. The park also has picnic tables with grills, a hiking trail and a small stream to play in. Or bring your kids down to the Buckeye Playground to “monkey around” in a wonderland of rope swings, ladders, huge logs, and slides. Want to stay a little closer to the center of town? Try out the Bark Park Playground, featuring swings, slides, and a climbing fort.

For kids ages 2-80 yrs-old

You’re never too young, or too old, to take up Golf. Bring your kids to the Mini Golf course located next to Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria and watch the fun as they try to master the hole in one. Who knows, one day, your little one could walk away with the coveted green jacket.

And every Friday between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria hosts Family Fun Night, featuring live music, a bounce house and an outdoor movie at dusk.

For the 4-legged kids

Unleash some fun… bring your fur babies to Beech Mountain’s Bark Park where they can roam free, chase a squirrel, make friends and maybe even find love (think Lady and the Tramp). This beautiful “playground” located near the kite field features two play areas (large/small), a dog watering station, tables and benches, a picnic pavilion with breathtaking views, ample parking and fully equipped waste stations. Lucky dogs!

Saturday night fever?

Put on your red shoes and dance with us. Our street dances are a big hit around here. This free event hosted by the town’s Chamber of Commerce is a fun way for visitors to take in some of the local color by interacting with our town’s most colorful characters as they live up to our motto: The more the beer flows, the more entertaining the dance becomes. The street dances take place on various Saturdays during Summer, check out our calendar page for dates and times.

Buckeye Recreation Center

It’s the Rec Mahal

The town’s Buckeye Recreation Center is a 22,500-square-foot facility offering both indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities. You can put those muscles to work in our modern fitness center and weight room; Meanwhile, the little ones can enjoy the outdoor themed playground or our indoor playroom built specifically for children under 12. Perhaps you prefer to take center court and shoot some hoops in our indoor/outdoor basketball courts. But if volleyball is more up your alley, don’t worry, we’ve got those courts too. Or maybe you prefer to indulge your U.S. Open fantasies by sauntering over to our tennis courts and challenging the family to “friendly” match… winner take all! The Rec Center is perfect for getting that much-needed cardio exercise, or for exercising your family’s competitive nature.

Classes and Groups and Workshops… oh, my!

Besides the facility itself, the Buckeye Recreation Center offers a number of recreational opportunities, such as: guided hikes, bird watching groups, sensory night hikes, as well as, instructional programs, like: art camps, craft classes, landscaping with native plants workshops. Yoga, Pilates, Spin and even Zumba… stay fit with a number of daily classes during the summer. And for the young ones, check out Buckeye’s Summer Camp. Learning was never this much fun!

On the lake

Whether you’re training to become a rowing master or just want to coast leisurely on our glistening lake waters, the Buckeye Recreation Center can help with that, as they offer free kayak and canoe rentals to residents and visitors alike.

The only time you want to hear those words in connection with golf is when describing our spectacular 18-hole golf course with magnificent views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This William Byrd designed gem extends to 6,250 yards in length and due to the course’s elevation, golfers enjoy playing at temperatures that rarely exceed 79 degrees. That’s what we call one cool golfing experience.
