Besides its spectacular natural scenery, western North Carolina is also home to one of the nation’s largest concentrations of arts-and-crafts studios and shops.

Be sure not to miss these attractions:

Linville Caverns
The only caverns open to the public in North Carolina, this popular family-owned attraction is open daily from March through November 30, and weekends only from December through February.

Linville Gorge
The deepest chasm east of the Grand Canyon, Linville Gorge is accessible from the Blue Ridge Parkway from Milepost 16, or from Wiseman's View in the Pisgah National Forest from Linville Falls. This rugged wilderness area has great hiking, river recreation, and wildlife.

Mystery Hill
Playing havoc with Newton’s theory! See water flow uphill, lose your shadow, and lean at a 45-degree angle! It's a fascinating exploration of science, optical illusions, and natural phenomena. Open daily, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., with longer hours during the summer months.

Penland School of Crafts
As the national center for craft education located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Penland offers one-, two-, and eight-week workshops in books and paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking, textiles, and wood. The school also sponsors artists' residencies, educational outreach programs, and a craft gallery open to the public.
